A must on every visit to Regensburg is the Stone Bridge, a masterpiece of medieval engineering and an important landmark next to the cathedral. The bridge, which connects Stadtamhof with the old town, was celebrated as a "wonder of the world" in the Middle Ages. It took just eleven years to build (probably 1135–1146), which was remarkable for the time. For almost 800 years it was the only Danube crossing in the region. Today the historic bridge, with its striking bridge tower and the "Bruckmandl", is a popular viewing point and pedestrian path.
